Historic Ships Wheel - This project is temporarly halted for historic investigation. This five foot ships wheel was authenticated by a Navy Seal as being authentic in design and construction for the period stamped on the brass hub.
The wheel has been coated in a semi transparent milky preservative of some kind.
This wheel has punch marks from being pried off a steering shaft. The stamped marking are Sept. 3, 1798 followed by a symbol then a larger font of the number 84 opposite the date and large number on the same side of the wheel is the location BOSTON MASS.
Our historic investigation led us to the fact that there were six Navy ships launch from Boston at that time frame. One is fully commissioned the U.S.S. Constitution.
We are unaware of the status of the other five. If this wheel is to valuable due to historic origin to carve, it will be preserved. Another wheel will be used in it's place. Frank will probably make his own. If the value is no more than that of a similar wheels that have no historic significance then the wheel will be carved regardless of it's history. If the origin of this wheel can not be determined in a reasinable time frame, it will be carved and no regets will follow for Frank. Because we are doing are best to investigate with our limited knowledge and resources. This wheel was an expensive investment. It's status can not be allowed to remain in limbo. Any help identifying the origin of this wheel is appreciated. Supporting items are two hand painted protraits of a couple, a large coffee cup with an image of a tall sailing ship and saucer dated Ralf 1750 moses 1751 Enoch 1784 WOODS&SONS Burslem England. These items were presented as a grouping along with the wheel in Jauary of 2008.
